LOCATION: Village of Binde, Northern Region
Binde is 15km from the district capital, Bunkpruku and 193km from the capital city, Tamale. Tamale is about 654km from Accra (Capital of Ghana). Regular transportation between the towns is available. There is also a 45 minutes air flight available from Accra direct to Tamale.
Background
Binde is a community in the northern Region of Ghana; the capital city of the northern region is Tamale. Binde lacks basic amenities such as pipe borne water and electricity. There are few boreholes located at vantage areas. The primary occupation of the people of Binde is peasant farming. Their stable food is “Saarbu” a meal made from corn flour. There is a clinic, a police duty post and an open market, which is predominantly for sale of “pito” (a locally brewed drink from millet).
The community has a public basic school up to the junior level. The majority of the youth have dropped out of school (due to a lot of factors such as lack of motivation, no parental guidance or pressure, congestion in classroom hence teacher unable to give the needed attention to each child)and those who supposedly completed could neither read nor write. The teenage pregnancy rate is very high and so are early and multiple marriages. The child birth rate is also very high both among the youth and the adults. The movement of the youth into sub-urban and urban centers remains a huge problem for policy makers and other urban dwellers.
These youth drift into these areas in search of non-existent jobs or to further their education or to acquire a vocation. These good intentions/dreams are often times not realised for several reasons. The moral of the youth is compromised due to lack of parental care. The youth, most especially the girls, come back home with a child or pregnancy. The boys become wayward. Those youth, who remain in the village perhaps for fear of the unknown or simply waiting for a good chance to join in the drift, find themselves involved in all kinds of bad practices, girls are given off for marriage at a very tender age or just get themselves impregnated.
It is with these background developments in mind that the need to create a sustainable development programme for the community has come up. The current pressing intervention to address these problems in Binde is the need to introduce vocational training to the youth. This way, they will have a good reason to stay back home, acquire knowledge and skills to help themselves and also contribute to the overall development of Binde.
